Children’s Area Redcar Cemetery

The ‘Friends Group’ were gardening in the middle section one day and noticed that the children’s area in the middle section was not marked as such and was right up against adult graves.The Group were offered help from young people on the”National Citizen’s initiative and chose us to spend £1000.It was decided to erect a metal arch fabricated by Godbolds of Egton at the entrance to the childrens area and also to provide three ceramic mushrooms with inserted discs which the young people wrote small rhymes such as ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’.The youngsters also designed the arch which included small birds, insects and flowers.Rose Memorials of Middlesbrough donated a beautiful ceramic children’s seat.The arch has the words ‘Precious Garden’ over the top and was funded by Coast and Country Housing.

New RAF Memorial

The Friends Group are planning a Memorial to the RAF.This will also include the Royal Flying Corps,the Royal Naval Air Defence Services and the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.The memorial will be situated in the old section just off the main road.This will be visible through the main entrance arch.We intend to get the views of all interested parties and have arranged a meeting to take place on Tuesday 21st February in Roseberry Square Library Redcar at 7.00pm.All Welcome.

Fashion Show

The ‘Friends Group’ organised a fashion show in Redcar Cricket Club recently.The clothes were provided by Bonmarch and Greenwoods.Eight models paraded on a catwalk kindly provided by St Benedicts Primary School.Over £300 was raised and this will go towards providing a lasting memorial to the RAF in the cemetery.Thanks to all who helped to make this event such a success.

Tulip Tree Sculpture

In the middle section of our cemetery,a cherry tree stood for over sixty years.Unfortunately it died.We were given permission by the Local Authority to have it cut down from forty foot to eight foot.A local tree sculptor Steve Iredale took sketches and set to work with his chain saws and sculpted a ’bunch of tulips’ .A base was erected around this.filled with soil and flowers planted.The sculpture petals were painted red and the leaves were painted green.We decided to dedicate the sculpture to the Yorkshire Regiment.After everthing was complete a dedication ceremony was arranged.This attracted a large crowd and was attended by Lt Col O’Kelly,the Mayor and Mayoress of Redcar And Cleveland ,our MP and a troupe of soldiers from the Yorkshire Regiment who marched in to the beat of a drum.The dedication Service was conducted by Rev Clive Artley retired Army Chaplain.Refreshments were served in the nearby Borough Park Bowls Club

The Friends Group and Redcar and Cleveland Council are proposing a joint venture to erect a memorial wall in the new section of Redcar Cemetery. The idea is that people who have loved ones cremated and their ashes scattered elsewhere could put up a plaque of remembrance to them. Also if people have a plaque at the crematorium and want it transfered to Redcar where the person is known more locally. Or perhaps ashes are added to a family grave and not added to the headstone then this will be a way of acknowedging the loved one. We would like to involve local people in a buying a brick fund-raising scheme to help with this initiative. Please get in touch if you would like to be involved Dorothy

The Friends Group are in the process of astablishing a unique feature within Redcar Cemetery.We have identified a dead tree and commisioned a well known tree sculpure to fashion a ‘bunch of tulips’

carol service

We were sorry to cancel the carol service in the cemetery this year as the weather was awful, we were worried that someone might slip and hurt themselves. We hope it will be better next year, sorry to disappoint so many people. Dorothy
